Water flow meter - which one to choose?

A water flow meter is a key device used in various sectors of industry and municipal economy. Water flow meters allow for optimization of water consumption, process quality control and settlement with suppliers. Selection of the appropriate water flow meter depends on many factors, including required measurement accuracy or operating conditions. A different water flow meter should be used for gravity flow (partial pipe), water in pressure systems or for open channels.

Water flow meters in pressure systems (fully filled pipelines).

Electromagnetic flow meters for water

One of the most popular solutions used to measure water flow in pressure systems is the electromagnetic flow meter. This type of flow meter will work not only in clean water, but also in water that contains solid particles. It is characterized by high accuracy. It does not contain moving parts, which increases the durability of the device and reduces the need for maintenance. We recommend paying attention to the electromagnetic flow meter Flow38 and the battery version Flow45 from the Czech manufacturer Comac Cal. The Flow38 flow meter is also available in a version with the MID certificate for billing. When using Flow38 and Flow45 flow meters, remember to use straight sections of appropriate length behind and before the flow meter.

Following the current trends related to increasing the comfort of work of people measuring flow, Comac Cal has developed an IoT module for use in Flow38 flow meters. It allows direct transfer of data from the flow meter to the cloud system. The user thus obtains data from the flow meter in real time (data is refreshed every 2 minutes). It is also possible to set alarms with notifications to email or phone when certain values are exceeded.

Another water flow meter is the EMDE-Z electromagnetic flow meter (Bass Instruments). It does not require straight sections. It can therefore be used after various elbows, valves, etc. It also allows for accurate measurement of turbulent flow. The difference between a standard electromagnetic flow meter and EMDE-Z is that it has more pairs of measuring electrodes.

Water flow meter with little interference in the pipeline

Another water flow meter in pressure systems is the FloProXCi with a Doppler ultrasonic sensor screwed into the pipeline by MACE (In-Situ). This is a good solution if we do not want to interfere too much with the pipeline, when there is no possibility of inserting flanges and thus connecting a standard flow meter. In the case of the FloProXCi, we can make just a 2-inch hole and screw the sensor into the pipeline. This device requires a fully filled pipeline, clean water or water with a minimal amount of impurities. A big advantage of the FloProXCi is that it can be used to monitor both flow and water quality using the entire range of products from the In-Situ family.

Non-invasive water flow meters

A separate group of water flow meters in pressure systems are non-invasive ultrasonic flow meters. They are recommended when there is no possibility of interfering with the pipeline. Our offer includes non-invasive Deltawave ultrasonic flow meters from the German manufacturer Systec Controls. The Deltawave flow meter is available in two versions: stationary - DeltawaveC-F and portable/battery -DeltawaveC-P. These devices can be quickly and easily mounted on the pipeline. They are characterized by high measurement accuracy. They also have high resistance to interference resulting from solid particles or gases contained in liquids.

Flow meters for clean water / treated sewage

For measuring the flow of treated water that does not contain any solids in open channels, the BOCF (Bass Instruments) gravity flow meter can be used. The flow is measured here using a radar or ultrasonic sensor measuring the level.

In case of measurements in not fully filled pipelines with the possibility of inserting a flow meter, an electromagnetic flow meter for partial filling can be used: Flow38LW (Comac Cal) or EMDE-PF (Bass Instruments). Only 10% filling of the flow meter is enough to obtain a flow measurement. Their accuracy is better than in the case of measurements based on radar.

electromagnetic flow meters for pipes not fully filled
Another solution for a clean water flow meter in channels that are not fully filled, open channels is FloPro XCi (MACE) in a version with an ultrasonic sensor mounted in the pipeline. The minimum level of filling the channel or pipe is 4 cm. The suggested channel width is up to 3 m. FloPro XCi offers the possibility of extension with water quality measurement using the entire range of In-Situ devices.

Rainwater (stormwater) flow meters

The measurement of rainwater (stormwater) flow is quite problematic due to the large range of measurement ranges. Additionally, such water may contain various types of solid elements that can damage the measuring device or disrupt the measurement. If it is possible to connect the flow meter to the pipeline, electromagnetic flow meters for pipes not fully filled Flow38 LW (Comac Cal) or EMDE-PF (Bass Instruments) can be used.

And which flow meter to choose for rainwater in open channels? In this case, it is worth paying attention to the RSHU radar flow meter (Bass Instruments). RSHU uses non-contact radar measurement technology. This means that the device measures the flow speed above the water surface, which eliminates the need to immerse it in the liquid. This technology is particularly useful in difficult conditions, where other flow meters could fail. There is no risk of clogging of the device, damage caused by solid particles in the water, etc. The RSHU radar flow meter can also be used in very large pipelines, e.g. DN1600.

Water level probe in water treatment plants and sewage treatment plants

The water level probe is a key device that enables accurate monitoring of water levels in reservoirs, wells, rivers, etc. Water level control is important in various applications such as: monitoring of water resources, groundwater level control, management of sewage systems, agricultural irrigation , or in the context of safety (e.g. in the case of flood protection). Water level probes can also be used in alarm systems to report excessive or insufficient water levels. Thanks to them, you can take appropriate actions, such as starting pumps, warning about the risk of flooding or the need to replenish water resources.
